National Oilwell Varco required a fleet of specialist coiled tubing trailers for Middle East operations, designed around complex customer-supplied CTU equipment and built to North American / USA road-legislation compatibility requirements.
The trailer had to package major equipment including the coiled tubing reel, operator cabin, powerpack, generator set and associated operational systems onto a road-going platform over 20 metres long. A key challenge was providing safe access and egress around the installed equipment during operation without compromising the trailer’s transport envelope.
King designed and manufactured four dual-use coiled tubing unit semitrailers, using S690 high-yield steel to reduce weight while maintaining the required structural performance.
The trailer incorporated a torque tube between the rear deck and main deck to improve torsional stiffness across the long trailer structure, supporting the integration of heavy CTU equipment and operational loads.
King also developed an innovative deployable walkway, outrigger and handrail system with four access ladders, allowing operators to safely access key areas of the CTU equipment when deployed for use. The access system could then be folded and stowed securely against the trailer for transport.
The completed trailers provided NOV with a fleet of four large-format CTU trailers capable of deploying offshore equipment for onshore operations in the Middle East.
